Training

03-06-09
We took today off due to the large crowd and the heavy snow on Thursday.

The dogs were very tired at breakfast time (6:00 am) this morning, so I decided it was in the best interest of the dogs to give them a day of rest.

I am sorry for any inconvenience that this caused any one.

I have learned a lot from my first Rondy experience. Next year, if the Rondy people have us back, we will not be as aggressive schedule-wise, as we were this year.

I want to thank every one that came out and took a ride, gave a donation or went away disappointed - but hopefully understood that the dogs need their rest.

Your generosity and kindness has made this a GREAT fundraiser experience.

We woke up on March first to a fresh blanket of snow. Sheila and our volunteers, Bob, Jeremy and Hannah, Kevin, Darryl, and John worked just as hard as the dogs! They groomed the trail for us so the dogs could see where they were going. It was a great day.

The dogs are resting today, Monday March 2nd, and will be back at Westchester Lagoon on Tuesday. We can't thank you all enough for your generosity and kindness.

We are learning much this year and hope next year will be even better. First we had to adjust the time schedule, and now today we realize we have to give the dogs a day off for rest - because this IS all about the dogs.

We want to share our amazing rescued athletes with the public so you all can see the recreational side of dog sled mushing. Please consider us when you are planning your activities with visiting friends and relatives.

Our kennel is open all year long, not just during Fur Rondy! Please consider adopting (either real or virtual) one of our dogs.

Anyone who has come to see us at Westchester Lagoon will tell you: "These dogs love to run!"

WOW! The awesome turnout for our first day at Fur Rondy was an unexpected surprise. The schedule was too aggressive for our rescue dogs so we have to adjust the times.

We cut off the adult riders at 4:20 and then only took kids, two and three at a time, until 6:30 pm.

The dogs were real troopers, but they knew where their truck was. At the end of each run in the later afternoon, they ignored all command and headed for their truck!

Thanks so much to my volunteers: Bob Allessi, Kevin McDonough, John Burke, my beautiful wife Sheila, my dedicated son Jeremy Fritz and his beautiful lady Hannah Sawada. I could not have handled this day (or the next 9!) without my Volunteers.

To all my sled riders, and those who only watched, took pictures and donated
cash - THANK YOU!

It was wonderful to see so many good parents and grandparents, kids, friends and relatives out enjoying Westchester Lagoon and Fur Rondy.

Happy New year.

I hope everybody had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Sheila and I had a great Holiday. Lots of excitement going on here at the rescue.

Come join us at Fur Rondy!!
We will be giving sled rides at the Fur Rondy this February/March. The dates are February 27th to March 8th. If everything works out we will do this every year as a fund raiser.

We will be located at W15th & U. Take 5th Ave to L then L to W15th a right turn. The hours are Monday threw Friday 12:00 to 3:00 and 4:00 to 8:00. Saturday and Sunday 11:00 to 3:00 and 4:00 to 8:00.

The dogs are doing fine. They are getting used to being around a lot of people and giving multiple rides.

Friday February 30th, at 9:55 (Alaska time), Greg will be on are local radio station Q99.7 to promote his adoptable dogs! Don't forget to tune into Q99.7 then!

The sun is shining in the Matanuska Susitna Valley! We have been making great improvements on the dog lot. Our most recent purchase is a four-dog training and exercise wheel that we mounted inside our training pen. So far the dogs that have tried it seem to enjoy it; the others look on with curiosity and tail-wagging interest! The trick is to get them to run in the same direction. They are all used to running around free inside the training pen, now they just have to learn about the wheel. Stay tuned for further updates.

Well it's that time of year when we start training. It is getting cool enough to run the dogs. We are training hard so that we can run our qualifiers in January 08. We are not going to run the Iditarod in 08 though. We have decided to wait one more year.

My wife (Sheila) has had her book, "Behind the Spoon", published. "Behind the Spoon" will hit the book shelves soon. (Spoons is what the cooks were called). The book is about a single mom with two kids, a college degree and a dead end job. Then one day an army recruiter comes to where she works and the rest is history. It is a great read!

Sheila will be gone until the 20th of December, and is having a GREAT time in the lower 48.

That is all for now. Will update soon.
Happy Trails!

IT'S HOT and the dogs are taking their usual afternoon nap to get away from all the skeeters. The mosquito magnet works ... up to a point.

Happy New Year from all of us here at All American Husky Rescue.

Sorry that I have taken so long to up date my web site. By now you all know that I withdrew from the Iditarod. It was a hard decision to make but it had to by done. I scratched at the half way point of the Knik 200 due to hurt dogs.

With funds getting low I withdrew from the Iditarod. Please don't worry we will try again in 08.

The dogs and I learned a lot this year and we are keeping a positive attitude for the rest of this training season. We will work on equipment during the summer and start training again in the fall.

I want to thank everyone that gave time and donations to the rescue. These dogs are amazing animals and I love working with them.

This will be the last update until we start training in the fall. I hope everyone has a safe and wonderful summer.

Happy trails
Greg Fritz
